Detailed Product Information:
John Avant has artistic abilities that were evident at an early age and his zealous interest in art led him to graduate from the Texas Academy of Art in Houston in 1964. Following art school, John served in the armed forces and then began his career as a commercial artist and picture framer in Houston, Texas.
His French heritage and family ties brought him back to Louisiana in 1986 where he pursued a career as a full-time fine artist and entrepreneur. He owned a gallery in the Riverwalk Mall in New Orleans where he soon became well known for his “on the spot” portrait sketches as crowds marveled at the likeness of the person he was drawing. Even though portraits are his forte, he is multi-talented in many venues. While owning several art galleries and picture frame shops in Lafayette, Louisiana and participating in fine art shows, he has managed to produce hundreds of oil paintings featuring a diversified range of subject matter. He is known for his beautiful and colorful sunsets and many people say they feel a sense of peace and calm viewing his paintings.
John participates annually at the Festival International and numerous other juried shows and festivals. John was featured sketching portraits and also his paintings were on display for a promotional video for tourism in Louisiana. John has also been featured on “Good Morning Acadiana” and “Downhome Acadiana”. His paintings and portrait sketches are represented in private and corporate collections across the nation.
John currently divides his time between his portrait and art show commitments and his studio in the Gallery of Cajun History in Henderson, Louisiana where he can be found most of the time at his easel painting. In addition, he spends many hours observing, photographing and researching the wildlife and swamps which are his favorite subjects to paint. This painstaking preparation comes out in the detailed, realistic style of his work.
