In his masterpiece, Jefferson Davis, American, William J. In 1886, Davis—an old man of seventy-eight and in poor health—had himself become a living monument, Cooper explains, and was an essential element in the formation of the Lost Cause ideology.

The recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities, he has won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Biography and the Jefferson Davis Award, among other honors. A Boyd Professor of History at Louisiana State University, he lives in Baton Rouge.
